Seeding Strategy: Bird Feeder Best Practices

August 26, 2010 Evergreen Enterprises, Inc. 0 Comments

Evergreen has long been in tune with bird-lovers, and nothing demonstrates that more clearly than our assortment of birdbaths, bird houses, and bird feeders. Among the many bird-related products that we sell, bird feeders have been a longstanding favorite, and we offer a wide variety of styles to suit any kind of décor.

We know that those who specialize in birding products expect not only great design, but a high level of accurate function. Evergreen strives to provide these things, plus the information to support these products, to help you show your birding customers that you’re a birding expert as well.

If you go to a restaurant, you tend to prefer certain foods (perhaps even a regular dish?) and certain seating locations (inside booth or outside table?). When it comes to our feathered friends, each type of bird has certain preferences as to what they like to eat and where they like to eat it. We’ve prepared a couple of helpful references on this for you.

Seeds and the Birds they Attract
First is a straight-forward chart showing many types of birds and the different kinds of seed they prefer. If you want certain birds to show up, try to attract them by stocking your feeder with the seeds that they most enjoy. You'll notice a lot of overlap between birds and seed types. Use this information to your advantage!

Bird Feeder Type and Location Preferences
We've noticed that certain kinds of birds tend to prefer to eat in specific locations or in certain ways. The table below will give you tips on what kind of feeder to use and where to place it for best results.

Buntings will use hanging feeders or feed on the ground
Cardinal tube or hopper feeder
Catbird fruit on platform feeder - lower is better

To help you identify each of these types of bird or seed, we suggest you check with online resources such as Google or Wikipedia. The Audobon Society also has great information about birds of all kinds, such as their Frequently Asked Questions page.

August 16, 2010 Evergreen Enterprises, Inc. 0 Comments

We want to thank all of you who came out to see us at World Market Center in Las Vegas! Traffic at the show was very encouraging, as several other gift vendors have now opened showrooms there, which is helping to attract additional buyers. We expect this trend to continue into the January 2011 show, so plan for an even more exciting market to open the new year!

We hope that many of you took advantage of the Kaleidoscope Social Media Bar to get assistance and tips on using services like Facebook and Twitter to build your business. If not, you can still visit the Kaleidoscope Partnership’s web site at www.tkpartnership.com. We encourage you to also interact with us on our own Facebook page and on Twitter.

As with any show, we’re always interested to see what product generates the most excitement. This can also help our customers plan their buying trends. Now that we’ve said good-night to the market, the stars of the show have come out…

Glass Bird Baths (Evergreen Garden)
Many of the new styles and piece types from our Spring-Summer 2011 Evergreen Flag and Garden release did very well at the market. Of those—and not surprisingly, given their performance so far this summer—the strongest was our new bird-related glass items, especially our glass bird baths. We had a bright, beautiful display at the front of the room which really attracted people to the unique shapes and rich colors.

Wall Décor (Cape Craftsmen)
Wall décor has developed into quite a strong category for our Cape Craftsmen line. We’ve got a wide variety of both elegant and eclectic pieces to offer in this arena, using different media such as carved wood, sculpted metal, and tried-and-true canvas. Our wall décor is even more impressive in person, so make sure to see for yourself next time you come see us!

Acrylic Tumblers (Cypress Home)
These attractive and useful cups continue their trend of popularity. They’re insulated to help beverages stay chilled, include their own top and straw, and provide transparent areas so you can see what’s inside. We’ve just introduced new designs in our Spring-Summer 2011 catalog. Keep your cool with these great gift items!

Ornaments (Cypress Home)
We know many of you are still placing last-minute orders for the upcoming Christmas buying season. Evergreen is here to accommodate with the full selection of holiday ornaments available in our Cypress Home line, in styles ranging from classic to contemporary. They’re an easy addition to any holiday décor.

Celebrate Your Canine Companions: Great Gifts for Dog Lovers

August 10, 2010 Evergreen Enterprises, Inc. 0 Comments

Pets have always been an important part of the lives of their owners. In times past, people would keep pets for the services they could provide. These days, the desire of many to have a pet stems from an interest in making more of an emotional connection.

It’s possible that people develop a stronger bond to dogs than any other pet. Dogs demonstrate noble qualities like companionship, service, obedience and loyalty. (Some say that while cats show us who we often are, dogs show us who we should want to be!) The many breeds of dogs also come in all shapes and sizes, which means there is a dog for every lifestyle.

The American Kennel Club maintains a list of the most popular breeds in the United States. For 2009, these were:
  1. Labrador Retriever
  2. German Shepherd Dog
  3. Yorkshire Terrier
  4. Golden Retriever
  5. Beagle
  6. Boxer
  7. Bulldog
  8. Dachshund
  9. Poodle
  10. Shih Tzu

This year, we have introduced a new collection of outdoor décor focused on realistic depictions of many of these favorite breeds as part of our Evergreen Flag & Garden line. We’ve developed product across 5 key product categories, all of which are strong, proven sellers...

Flags
These Silk Reflection sublimated flags feature original portrait art by Mark Haas, along with the name of the breed, which reads correctly from both sides of the flag. As all our flags, these are available in both a large house size and a small garden size. We’ve even left space at the bottom for the owner to personalize their flag with their dog’s name, using any method they choose.

Floormats
Our Silk Reflection floormats combine the same dog portrait art with some wording about the history and traits of each respective breed, to add meaning and a bit of flair. These floormats work well indoors or out and love to be accompanied by one of our recycled rubber floormat trays.

Garden Stones
If your tastes lean toward garden décor, our dog garden stones are the perfect accent. Like the floormats, they feature a sculpted portrait of the breed along with decoratively typeset wording about the breed. The back of each stone includes a keyhole for wall hanging.

Windchimes
The tops of these chimes are a miniature handpainted resin sculpt of the entire dog, on a platform with the name of the breed. Its unique characteristics are shown on the dangler at the bottom of the chime. Metal chime tubes add a light and lovely accent of sound.

Statuaries
Perhaps the most impressive item in our Companion Breeds collection, these statuaries are sculpted in resin and hand painted with impressive lifelike detail. Ranging from 11” to 19” high, each statue includes a removable double-sided sign around its neck—one side reads “Welcome Friends” and the other side shows the name of the breed. These lovable figures are a perfect garden accent or front-door greeting for any dog lover, and can even act as a memory of a dearly departed pet.
